چکیده

The material needs from our society are reaching the crisis point, as the demand for resources will soon exceed the capacity of the present fossil resource based infrastructure [1]. Currently, fossil-based energy resources, such as petroleum, coal, and natural gas, are responsible for about three quarters of the primary energy consumption in our world. While decreasing crude-oil reserves, enhanced demand for fuels worldwide, increased climate concerns about the use of fossil-based energy carriers, and political commitment, the focus has recently turned to develop the utilization of renewable energy resources [2]. Gullón et al. [3] described the variety of problems on present social, economic and technological situation, which including: the fear for a shortening of the supplies of basic resources, as the population growth; the increasing per capita demands of the developing economies for goods and energy, derived from the increasing purchase power of the population; environmental challenges, especially those related to effects of greenhouse gas emissions (emphasis on CO2) on the global climate; the national security issues surrounding reliance on imported oil [4].

Toward glycerol biorefinery: metabolic engineering for the production of biofuels and chemicals from glycerol

As an inevitable by-product of the biofuel industry, glycerol is becoming an attractive feedstock for biorefinery due to its abundance, low price and high degree of reduction. Converting crude glycerol into value-added products is important to increase the economic viability of the biofuel industry. Metabolic engineering of industrial strains to improve its performance and to enlarge the produc...

Bridging the gap between feedstock growers and users: the study of a coppice poplar-based biorefinery

Background In the biofuel industry, land productivity is important to feedstock growers and conversion process product yield is important to the biorefinery. The crop productivity, however, may not positively correlate with bioconversion yield. Therefore, it is important to evaluate sugar yield and biomass productivity. In this study, 2-year-old poplar trees harvested in the first coppice cycle...

Investigation of biochemical biorefinery sizing and environmental sustainability impacts for conventional bale system and advanced uniform biomass logistics designs

The 2011 US Billion-Ton Update1 estimates that there are enough agricultural and forest resources to sustainably provide enough biomass to displace approximately 30% of the country’s current petroleum consumption. A portion of these resources are inaccessible at current cost targets with conventional feedstock supply systems because of their remoteness or low yields. Reliable analy ses and pro...

Biorefinery – Systems

Biorefineries combine necessary technologies between biogenic raw material and the industrial intermediates and final products. The paper represents the providing code-defined basic substances (via fractionation for the development of industrially relevant product family trees). The main focus is directed on precursor-containing biomass with preference of the carbohydrate line, in particulary o...

LCA of 1,4-Butanediol Produced via Direct Fermentation of Sugars from Wheat Straw Feedstock within a Territorial Biorefinery

The bio-based industrial sector has been recognized by the European Union as a priority area toward sustainability, however, the environmental profile of bio-based products needs to be further addressed. This study investigated, through the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach, the environmental performance of bio-based 1,4-butanediol (BDO) produced via direct fermentation of sugars from wheat ...
